Bilingual Storytime

Developed in partnership with the Somali Advice Link charity and the Powerhouse Library, the project consisted of weekly sessions of storytime in English and other languages such as Arabic, Somali, Romanian, Russian.

Originally designed to support families with pre-school age children who spoke those languages at home, the sessions also became language tasters as families from other linguistic backgrounds joined in. It was an opportunity to celebrate languages spoken by local families.

The sessions also empowered a group of adult ESOL learners to showcase their linguistic resources. They worked together as part of their class project to plan the activitiess, translate texts in their own languages and deliver bilingual story telling and crafts sessions.

One session was run as part of the celebrations for International Mother Language Day and you can read about it here.
